Student Opportunities
Get involved in hands-on experiences that will enhance your degree. You’ll learn more about your interests, expose yourself to new ideas, gain professional skills, and build a network that will support you beyond UConn.

Ways to Get Involved
Internships
Internships are work-learning experiences that give you the opportunity to apply your coursework to real-world problems and gain professional connections with employers. Geography, urban and community studies, and environmental studies offer dedicated internship courses for undergraduate students.
Urban Semester Program
The Urban Semester Program offers students a unique opportunity to engage in service learning and public service, combining classroom and internship experiences to help address challenges in Hartford. You'll be offered the opportunity to work in the heart of the city’s community with nonprofit organizations and government agencies.
Undergraduate Research
Looking to get involved in research as an undergraduate student? It can build your resume and help you:
- Gain exposure to new interests.
- Learn valuable transferable skills that can be used in any career or industry.
- Build meaningful relationships with your professors and peers.
The Office of Undergraduate Research supports students throughout the research cycle.
Service Learning
We strongly encourage our students to become actively engaged in their communities. Service learning differs from volunteering in that the work performed is directly related to what is being taught, read, and discussed in the classroom.
Students interested in taking part in service learning should consider taking:
- URBN 1300: Exploring Your Community
- URBN 2000: Introduction to Urban and Community Studies
- EVST 3200: Sustainable Community Food Systems Seminar
- GEOG 3420: Field Methods in Geography
Leadership and Experiential Programs
UConn offers leadership and experiential opportunities for students to develop their leadership, community-building, and interpersonal skills.
The Leadership Discovery program introduces students to opportunities for leadership at UConn and beyond. Students will develop their leadership competencies through self-reflection, experiential learning, exploration of team dynamics, communication, and cultural competence.
Volunteering
Our students volunteer in one-day community service events, week-long alternative Spring Break programs, and more long-term opportunities to get involved with local organizations.
